2003-10-18 - 5:45 p.m.

We spent the night in Hickory NC, and will spend the next night here as well. Last night, Betty (the gorgeous dancer from Cuba), Ratkanhnha, Pam (a slightly overweight, tough, nice, and feminist actress), Mark (a silly, dear, gay man who looks like PeeWee Herman, but in a good, buff way), and Steve (a seriously in-shape ex-QB who has an MA and a penchant for beat-poetry and HipHop) played 'Asshole', a card/drinking game. I started as Asshole, and worked my way up to President by the final round. I was the picture of abusive authority. This morning I watched a program on A+E about Geisha. Turns out they were not Prostitutes but but escorts (in the more honorable sense of the word). They study dance, literature, conversation, everything. Basically, they are artists of conversation and bon vivantism. They are also dying out, through lack of demand, scandal, and cheap slutty knockoffs. They are luxuries in recession.

Intellectual

Calling a halt to DeToqueville for the moment - I only have a week before I get to NYC, and I have to read the books by Saskia Sassen and Arundhathi Roy before then to give them back to Billy. The stuff on Immigration is especially good in Sassen. Wonderful to examine immigration control against the freedom of Capital. I think my University of Chicago essay is probably really callow, as in fact it was. I think I won't have fooled them. I probably came off exactly as I am: smart interested, but a bit of a con-artist. Then again, that may be attractive to them.
